SHAH ALAM, March 12 (Bernama) -- Four days after evading the media following the Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) loss in the 12th general election last Saturday, its chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo pledged to ensure that the new state government led by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) would fulfil the promises contained in its manifesto.

The former Selangor menteri besar pledged to turn the BN into a strong opposition to ensure that everything that had been built by the party in the past were well looked after by the coalition government comprising the PKR, DAP and PAS.

"I will ensure that the people of Selangor are well taken care of and the Selangor BN hopes that the new government will look after the welfare of the rakyat so that they can enjoy quality life," he said at a press conference at the Umno office, here.

Khir said although the BN lost, it was actually stronger compared to the coalition government as the BN won 20 seats compared to the ruling parties namely PKR which won only 15 seats, DAP (13) and PAS (8).

Thus, he said, the BN did not have any problem in ensuring that the voice of the 'opposition' was heard particularly with regard to the promises made by the three political parties in their respective manifesto.

"We will demand, we will ensure that all the promises are fulfilled. The people need not worry, we are going to help them," he said.

The PKR, DAP and PAS have their respective manifesto and among the promises made by them were free medical care for senior citizens aged 65 and above, a special allowance for single mothers, and reducing assessment rates by 20 per cent.

At the press conference, Mohamad Khir also refuted allegations that the BN government had destroyed important documents before handing over the government leadership to the coalition government.

“Nothing to hide, I’m very transparent. Don't create nonsensical stories, everything is in order," he said.

He also refuted talks that the Selangor BN was attempting to convince PAS to join the BN in forming a coalition government.

“No. It is just a rumour. We decided that we stay as opposition," he said.

Mohamad Khir said the Selangor BN would focus its efforts at ensuring that the party recaptured Selangor in the next election.
