| A Pleasant Line-up Of Fresh Faces For Selangor BN |

SHAH ALAM, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- The names are out. Almost half of the Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates for state seats in the March 8 general election are fresh faces while for the parliamentary seats, about 20 per cent are new blood.
The introduction of a number of significant new faces in the state BN line-up unveiled by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo Thursday indicates that the renewal process is taking shape in the states, said some young politicians.
An Umno member, Al-Ghazali Abdul Latiff, believes that the BN leadership has devised the right strategy by fielding almost all the fresh faces in the urban and suburban contituencies.
"Usually, new people are very enthusiastic if they are given the chance. As we know, people in the urban areas are very demanding, critical and vocal. I believe the new people can meet their expectations," he said.
Among the BN new faces who will be fielded in the urban and suburban state constituencies are Victor Gu Chian Peow (Damansara Utama), Haslinda Mohd Zerain (Bukit Antarabangsa), Zein Isma Ismail (Kota Damansara) and Datuk Subahan Kamal (Taman Templer).
Al-Ghazali said the absence of former Selangor menteri besar Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib's name in the candidates list despite speculations that he would make a comeback did not come as a surprise as he believed that the party would consider fielding newcomers.
He said the veteran leaders still had a role to play even though they were no longer elected representives by giving guidance and sharing their experience with the new candidates.
Selangor Puteri Umno deputy chief Rina Mohd Harun said the selection of two Puteri Umno leaders -- Haslinda Mohd Zerain and Roselinda Abdul Jamil -- to contest in the general election was a recognition of the wing and the young generation.
"I have no doubt that the two are very capable to carry the heavy duty," she said. Haslinda will contest the Bukit Antarabangsa state seat and Roselinda, the Pelabuhan Klang state seat.
Rina said it was an indication that the party leadership was "sensitive" to identifying capable young leaders for active politics.
There are 22 parliamentary and 56 state seats in Selangor.
