Ministry Forms Special Unit To Help Franchisors

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development will set up a premises development unit to help franchisors obtain strategic locations in the country's shopping complexes for their business.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the unit will come under the ministry's agency, Uda Holdings Bhd.

He said a major problem faced by franchisors was in getting a strategic location in the popular shopping complexes.

"The ministry will establish the business premises development unit under Uda to look into renting strategic premises in large business complexes to help out franchisors facing the problem of getting such premises," he said.

Mohamed Khaled said this after officiating a seminar here Monday on franchise business under the Graduate Franchise Programme and Women Franchise Programme.

He said the unit, which will be allocated RM20 million by the ministry, will negotiate with the owners of the shopping complexes for strategic business premises.

Mohamed Khaled said the government was aiming to establish at least 1,000 franchisors under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.

Towards this end, the government has allocated RM29 million and has established 134 franchisors.

On the growth of the local franchise MalaysiaKitchen overseas, Mohamed Khaled said My Franchise Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned company of Perbadanan Nasional Bhd (PNS), which owns the franchise will be opening its second overseas fast food halal restaurant in London this April.

MalaysiaKitchen currently has a restaurant in Tokyo, Japan in which it has invested RM2 million the past one year.
