Thai Princess Galyani Passes Away

BANGKOK, Jan 2 (Bernama) -- Thailand's widely-respected Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, passed away at the age of 84 in Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital early Wednesday, a statement issued by the Royal Household Bureau said.

The princess' condition worsened on Tuesday night and she passed away at 2:54 a.m. (1954 GMT, Tuesday) on Wednesday, China's Xinhua news agency cited the statement as saying.

The princess had received treatment for cancer at the hospital for months. Well-wishers had flocked to the hospital since the news spread that she was admitted.

The princess is the elder sister of two kings of the Chakri Dynasty (Bangkok Dynasty) -- King Rama Ananda and the present King Bhumibol Adulyadej. She had stomach pain in June last year and X- ray test showed that she had cancer. Early Royal statements said she had problems with the right side of her body, and scans found that some parts of her brain were dysfunctional, caused by bloodclots.

The royal funeral will take place at the Dusit Mahaprasart Throne inside the Grand Palace.

The mourning period will last until the 100th day of her departure, according to the Bureau.
