GENTING, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- With 6,118 rooms, First World Hotel at Genting Highlands is now recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's largest hotel.

The title was officially handed over Monday by Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor to Resorts World Bhd's president and chief operating officer Lee Choong Yan at the hotel here.

Lee said First World Hotel had exceeded the last record of 5,005 rooms previously held by MGM Grand Hotel and Casino at Las Vegas, US.

He said the hotel had 2.6 million guests checked in last year and was expecting to achieve a target of three million guests for this year.

"This amounts to almost 250,000 people staying here per month," he added.

Lee said with a hotel of this magnitude, a total manpower strength of about 2,000 men and women were employed to ensure the guests' comfort.

He also voiced Resorts World's support for the government's efforts in "Visit Malaysia 2007" by maintaining its room rates in 2007 to attract more visitors.

Besides recognition from the Guinness World Records, First World Hotel was also awarded a certificate for being "The Largest Hotel in the World" by "Ripley's Believe It or Not" in June 2006.

Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan said that Malaysia might have the "hardware" of top resorts and other facilities but the country also needed to cultivate the "software" as well.

"Service par excellence is one of the key factors in ensuring that visitors return to our country," he added.
