KL Monorail Exceeds Initial Target After Three Years Of Operation

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- Running for the first time on the big day of August 31 2003, KL Monorail, the latest addition to the integrated light rail transit system for Kuala Lumpur has never looked back.

Making history as the first company to use the made-in Malaysia Monorail coaches, the company has since created a string of other histories, successes and failures.

And Friday, after three years of rendering its services to dwellers of this cosmopolitan city, another spot-light will be on KL Monorail as it celebrates its 40 millionth passenger.

KL Monorail System Shd Bhd Managing Director Bakhtiar Jamilee Abdul when contacted said that the celebration signified an achievement of KL Monorail which had surpassed its initial passenger volume in under three years of operation.

"It is an achievement because in less then three years of operation, KL Monorail has achieved its target," he told Bernama here Thursday.

Bakhtiar said considering its brief operation period, the figure was also considered unexpected.

The KL Monorail 40 Millionth passenger celebration will be grace Friday by Minister of Federal Territory Datuk Zulhasnan Rafique who will present a special gift to the lucky passenger at the KL Sentral Monorail Station.

The minister, guests and the media will then ride on a monorail to proceed to Bukit Bintang station for a cake-cutting ceremony.

With a total of 11 fully elevated stations and capable of handling up to a maximum 5,000 passengers per hour per direction (PPHPD), the KL Monorail is fast becoming the main public transportation system especially to those working around the Kuala Lumpur Golden Triangle.

The RM1.8 billion KL Monorail system, which begins from Titiwangsa station to the KL Sentral Station, serves a high density corridor covering the city's central commercial, employment, hotel and shopping district.
