KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 (Bernama) -- The residents of Kampung Pasir in Hulu Kelang who were the victims of Wednesday's landslide are bitter over Ampang Jaya Municipal Council's (MPAJ) inaction despite repeated calls to check on the development activities on the slope.
Rapid KL bus driver Mohd Yunus, 55, who lost his mother-in-law, daughter and two grandchildren in the incident, said the calls on MPAJ since the last three years fell on deaf ears until early this year when it realised how serious the problem was.
"The Kampung Pasir village committee repeatedly voiced their concern over the eroding slopes and only early this year MPAJ ordered the developer to build a retaining wall that was completed a week ago," said Mohd Yunus, an Indonesian with permanent resident status, when met at the scene, here Thursday.
"Previously the hill area was not cleared but since the last three years clearing began and in the end we are the victims," he said.
In yesterday's 4.45pm incident, Mohd Yunus lost his mother in-law Sunida Gision, 70, who perished with his daughter Hayati Mohd Yunus, 24, after their longhouse caught fire following the landslide.
Two of Hayati's children - Elidaya Sharul Fahimin, 4, and Iqlima Mahmud, 3 - are feared buried in the landslide.
Mohd Yunus said the area is occupied by about 200 people with 90 percent of them being Indonesians who rent the dwellings from the locals.
Mohd Yunus has been renting there for the last 10 years with his wife and four of his six adult children and their families.
On the incident he said: "My wife is still traumatised and only God knows our suffering. My wife breaks down every now and then following the death of two family members and another two who are still missing.
"I was driving the bus yesterday and at about 5pm I received a call from my son telling my grandchildren were buried, and my mother-in-law and daughter were burnt in the incident, and I rushed to the scene.
"I was in total shock after seeing the devastation," he said.
