KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- Royal Professor Ungku Aziz was Tuesday awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Economy during Universiti Malaya (UM)'s convocation ceremony here.

Ungku Aziz, 83, a former Vice-Chancellor of the university, received the award from UM Chancellor, Sultan Azlan Shah.

He is also the sole Royal Professor in the country.

UM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Hashim Yaacob in his speech during the presentation ceremony said Ungku Aziz was a renaissance man who constantly excelled in whatever field he pursued.

"Pak Ungku is a seeker of truth, knowledge of rural economy with life long learning being his expertise. He is also a philosopher on the thoughts and habits of the Malays," he said.

At UM's convocation this time, 5,407 graduates were awarded first degrees, 1,321 Masters degrees, 99 doctorates and 12 honorary doctorates. Six people were awarded the Profesor Emeritus title.
