Coaching, Counselling Skills Important In Tackling Youth Problems, Says Taib
KUCHING, March 18 (Bernama) -- Coaching and counselling skills are important in tackling youth problems to ensure youths do not display anti-social behavior because of peer pressure, said Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
He said according to studies done, peer pressure was seven times more influential than the influence of parents.
"Peer pressure is a significant contributor to anti-social behavior like running away from home and drug addiction," he said when opening the Youth Assembly 2011 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here Friday.
Some 5,000 youths including youth leaders and members of uniformed and non-uniformed organisations attended the gathering which was held the recognise the contribution of youths towards the development of Sarawak.
At the function, Taib also presented the State's Youth Icon Award (International) to Izyan Alirahman @ Zee Avi, 26, and Alia Geneid, 16.
National swimmer Bryan Nickson Lomas, 21, was presented the Youth Icon Award for sports, singer Mohd Hafiz Mohd Suip, 21 (Youth Icon - Culture/Arts), entreprenuer Jason Jonathan Lo, 36 (Youth Icon - Entreprenuership), Albert Wong Tuong Chui, 28 (Youth Icon- Disabled Persons) and Hamzah Saufi, 32 (Youth Icon - Volunteerism).
