Sarawak Islamic Religious Department To Screen Muslim Preachers From Abroad
KUCHING, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Islamic Religious Department will continue to monitor the activities of foreign Muslim preachers, especially from the Wahhabi sect.
Assistant Minister at the Chief Minister's Office Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said this was to ensure that they would not create any confusion to the followers of Sunnah Wal Jamaah (Sunni Islam) practised in the country.
He said the move did not imply that the Wahhabi practice of Islam was wrong, but only to ensure that Muslims would not be divided due to confusion over the matter.
"We don't want Muslims with insufficient knowledge on the Wahhabi practice to fight with each other , to the extent of not wanting to share the same mosque with those who practise the Sunnah Wal Jamaah."
He said this after presenting the confirmation letter for the newly-upgraded Husniwarrahmah Mosque in Taman Rahmat Hussin to hold Friday prayers, here, Friday.
Daud said although intellectuals would be able to accept the differences between Wahhabi and Sunnah Wal Jamaah (Sunni Muslim) practices, it was feared that the differences would take a toll on Muslims in remote areas who had litte knowledge on the matter.
The Wahhabi regards as unnecessary, among others, the reciting of "qunut" in the Subuh prayer, reading of Yasin or talqin for the dead and performing zikir after the daily prayers as practised by Muslims in the country.
On Thursday, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator Datuk Dr Masitah Ibrahim said the National Fatwa Council had never deemed Wahhabi as a form of deviant teachings, but it should be curbed to prevent confusion among Muslims.
