Floods In Mersing Under Control, Public Advised Caution

MERSING, Jan 2 (Bernama) -- Floods in Mersing that were caused by heavy rain and the collision of huge high tides since Sunday is currently under control.

However, Mersing district officer Ashari Kasnan said that they would continue to monitor the situation periodically because high tides were expected to continue until next week.

"High tides of between 3.7 and four metres are expected. The collision (high tides and heavy rain) has caused the district's water level to suddenly rise to the extent of resulting in floods," he said when met at a temporary relief centre (PPS) at the hall of Sekolah Kebangsaan Air Papan here today.

As at noon, 343 victims who were affected by the floods in Mersing were housed at seven PPS.

Meanwhile, he said Sekolah Kebangsaan Pulau Aur and Sekolah Kebangsaan Pulau Sibu had to be closed for a week since yesterday to make way for cleaning work.

"The situation of five inhabited islands near Mersing were also still under control and we have sent sufficient supplies to last until March," said Ashari.

The islands affected were Pulau Sibu, Pulau Aur, Pulau Tinggi, Pulau Pemanggil and Pulau Besar.

A National Disaster Management Agency representative would observe areas in the district affected by the floods this evening to assess the amount of aid needed to do the repairs.

He also reminded the public to practice caution and not to go fishing this week due to the torrential currents.

Housewife Nurul Aida Kamarudin said the water level suddenly soared following heavy rain last night and resulted in seven more of her family members being evacuated to PPS.

"I am also worried about the flood condition. As of last night, the water level was knee-high. I hope the floods will recede soon so that I can immediately return home," she said.
