Johor Policeman Detained For Suspected Bribery

JOHOR BAHRU, Dec 7 (Bernama) -- JohorMalaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detained a police officer inKulaifor suspicion of soliciting and receiving bribes from a religious teacher.

According to a source, the 49-year-old suspect with the rank of corporal, isstationedat the KulaiDistrict Headquarters (IPD) Crime Investigation Department.

The source said the suspect was arrested in a car repair workshop at about 9.30 pm to facilitate the ongoing investigation.

The suspect was alleged to have received RM3,000 from a religious teacher as an inducement to settle an investigation on a drug case involving him being carried out by the Narcotics Departmentof KulaiIPD.

Following the arrest, a MACCinvestigation team conducted a searchat two different locations in Johor and seized a bank account and several related documents.

The case is being investigated under Section17(a) of the MACCAct2009, which provides for a fine of five times the value of the bribery orRM 10,000, whichever is higher and a jail term not exceeding 20 years upon conviction.

JohorMACCdirectorDato Azmi Alias when contacted confirmed the arrest and said the suspect would be remanded for one week from today until Dec 13.

The remand order was issued byJohor BahruSubordinate Court assistant registrarFaridatul Farrah Mohd Shukri.
