Old Folks Home Manager Claims Trial To Trafficking Five Women

JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 5 (Bernama) -- The manager of an old folks home pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today on five counts of trafficking five Indonesian women for forced labour exploitation three months ago.

Tan Chang Keong, 60, made the plea after the charges were read before Judge Mohammad Khalid Ab Karim.

The accused was alleged to have been trafficking the five women, aged between 22 and 50, for the purpose of exploiting them through forced labour at the Old Folks Home in Jalan Mentahak, Taman Johor, Tampoi, here at 6.30 pm on July 2.

He was charged under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 which carries a maximum jail term of 15 years and fine, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Asmah Zainal Ariffin applied for bail of RM20,000 for each count but counsel M.Vinodharan, who represented the accused, sought for the bail to be reduced.

Mohammad Khalid later granted bail of RM20,000 with one surety for the five counts and fixed Oct 10 and 11 for a re-mention of the case.
