Nine Community Fire-fighting Squads To Be Set Up In Keningau

KENINGAU, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Sabah Fire and Rescue Department director Nordin Pauzi said nine community firefighting (PBK) teams had been set up in the Keningau district to boost awareness on fire safety among the people.

He said the setting of the PBK teams in villages in Keningau was the first in the state.

"Villagers who join the teams will be exposed to the basic method of using fire extinguishers," he told reporters after launching the fire safety campaign held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration here today.

He said it was part of efforts by the department to educate the people, especially rural residents, on fire safety.

Nordin said the level of fire safety awareness among owners of premises in Sabah was also better now.

"This shows a positive development," he said.

He said during the department's inspection on 119 premises in the state last year, which included 102 shopping malls and 15 hotels, all were found to be safety compliant.

Nordin said the main cause of fire during the festive season was due to carelessness and urged the public to exercise caution.
