Nine Vietnamese Fishermen Fined, Jailed For Encroaching Into Malaysian Waters

KOTA KINABALU, Nov 10 (Bernama) --Nine Vietnamese fishermen were sentenced to six months' jail each by the Sessions Court here today after they pleaded guilty to illegally entering and fishing in Malaysian waters lastAugust.

Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad, who ordered them to serve the sentencefrom the date of arrest, also imposed a fine of RM20,000 on skipper Phang Hong Dai, 40 and RM5,000 each on the eight crew members .

The eight were Van Thia, 38; Phan Thanhliu, 30; Hyliyn Bien Hoang, 43; Tran Kim Tiew, 33; Le Thanh, 38; Vo Ngoc Ly, 60; Phan Nhat Nam, 25; and Phan Van Co, 19.

Theoffence under Section15 (1) (a) of the Fisheries Act 1985was committedat about 36 nautical miles southwest of Pulau Kalutanoff northern Kudaton Aug 26.

MMEA deputy public prosecutor Nurun Nazifah Muhammad Iyen Atimconducted the prosecution.
