Occupational Safety, Health Awareness In Kedah Still Low

ALOR SETAR, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- Many employers in Kedah still fail to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, says state Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) director Hazlina Yon.

She said basic workplace standards must never be compromised in the pursuit of profit.

"I see that most employers are very concerned with the quality of products like getting the halal certificate, but take lightly on occupational safety and health. If accidents occur, lives may be lost and productivity will be affected," she said.

She said this to Bernama at the Seminar and Dialogue Programmes with Employers 2018 at the Kedah DOSH office here today.

About 30 employers from the manufacturing and service sectors attended the programme organised by the Kedah DOSH to enhance their knowledge and skills on the matter.

Hazlina said a total of 366 cases of workplace-related accidents were recorded in the state last year which comprised 11 fatalities, permanent disabilities (26), hazardous incidents such as fire (eight) and non-permanent disabilities (321).

She said 547 cases related to occupational diseases were also reported last year.
