Fishing Activity At Sg Muda Brings Back Nostalgic Memories

SIK, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- The group fishing activity, commonly known as 'hambat', held at Sungai Muda, Pokok Jerai, Kampung Betong near here today brought back nostalgic memories from the 70's and 80's.

Kedah State Information, Rural Development and Poverty Eradication Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Tajudin Abdullah said the method of fishing in a group used a 'laplai' (rope tied and hung with nets to trap fish).

"This activity is very lively because it also involves the Siamese community living nearby, all working together to catch fish over one kilometre in distance.

"As a result, this morning the villagers managed to catch about 20 kg of fish, including 'lampam' and 'sebarau'," he told reporters during the programme here, today.

Mohd Tajuddin, who is also Belantik state assemblyman, said the activity should be held on an annual basis as it could strengthen the unity among the locals, especially the Malay and Siamese communities.

He also released a total of 14,000 lampam sungai fries from the state fisheries department into the river to allow the group fishing activity to be held on a continuous basis.
