Tanjung Bungah Landslide Due To Three Elements Of Negligence - Penang Assemblyman

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- Tanjung BungahDAP assemblymanTeh Yee Cheu claimed that the cause of the landslide at theaffordable housing project site in Lengkok Lembah Permai, Tanjung Bungah on Oct 21, was due to three elements of negligence.

He said the three elementswerenegligence in giving approval, monitoring and compliance to guidelines.

"At least three parties are responsible for the landslide at theconstruction site. Wemust take heed to this information so that better and proper plans aredrafted and all guidelines are followed.

"This disastercould have been avoided if all these matters weretaken into account asthe construction project was on a hillside. There was negligence as building construction had commenced before earthworks wereready," he said when debating on the Supply Bill 2018 at the Penang State Assembly sitting here today.

In the incident on Oct 21,a landslide at the hill slope project claimed the lives of 11 workers comprising a local resident; five Bangladeshis; two Indonesians; two Myanmar nationals and a Pakistani when they were buried in the landslide.

Tehadded that thetopography also proved that the area was part ofa hillslope thus dismissing claims by certain quarters that the landslide occurred on flat land.

"The topograhicposition can determine that the site is on a hill slope and further up from the landslide area there is a river that is not known to all. I hope thePenang State Commission of Inquiry will take note of this," he said.
