Marine Police Seizesmuggled Cigarettesworth RM2.67 Mln

TUMPAT, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- Pengkalan Kubor marine police (PPM) have confiscated 199,700 packets of smuggled cigarettes valued at RM2.67 million including tax (RM2.34 million) at a store in Kampung Jeram, Pasir Puteh yesterday.

Pengkalan Kubor Region 3 commanding officer ASP Ahmad Amri Abdul Rahman said two men, aged 27 were detained when they were found carrying boxes of cigarettes from the store to a four-wheel drive.

"The seizure was conducted by a team of 13 PPM personnel at 9.30pm based on public information and intelligence," he told reporters here today.

Ahmad Amri said the cigarettes were believed to be marketed in the state.

"From initial investigations, the smuggling has been going on in the past one year using the modus operandi of bringing in the cigarettes by road and river," he said.

He said marine police would stepping up intelligence to eradicate smuggling in the state.
