No Logging Activities Taking Place In Forest Reserve Areas In Jelebu - MB

SEREMBAN, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- The Negeri Sembilan government today refuted the allegation that logging activities are taking place in Kenaboi and Gapau forest reserve areas in Jelebu.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the allegation posted on Anak-Anak Jelebu's Facebook page recently was baseless.

He said investigations carried out by the state's Forestry Department revealed that the two areas were titled land (owned by individual or company) which were being cleared for agricultural purposes.

"The Forestry Department strongly refuted the allegation that logging activities are taking place in Kenaboi. The area in question is a titled land which a private company had bought and owned since 1996. Clearing work are being done by the owner to turn the land into a durian farm.

"Meanwhile, the area in question in Gapau also belonged to a company since 1999 and they are clearing the land to grow herbs," he told a press conference after chairing the state executive council meeting here today.

Mohamad said the department had also confirmed that no logging permit or licence had ever been issued to take out timbers from Kenaboi forest reserve area.

The menteri besar said the state government was committed to ensuring that its forest reserve in the state would remain preserved and protected.

He said this was because forest reserve was a vital element in biodiversity stability and a main source of water in the state.

"Biodiversity development is aimed at ensuring sustainable development and preservation of natural resources to strengthen the permanent forest reserve area through the preservation of forest and replanting of trees," he said.

In another development, the menteri besar expressed sympathy and condolences to the family of the 14-year-old Nur Afini Roslan, who died when a blade from a grass mower tractor struck her head yesterday morning.

"The state government and the people of Negeri Sembilan are truly saddened by the tragedy. We extend our condolences to the family of the victim.

"I'm not blaming anyone, but this incident could be avoided if everybody take caution and pay extra attention to safety in everything that we do," he said.

The student of Sekolah Menengah Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Gemas, Negri Sembilan, died on the spot in the 10.30 am incident, which happened at the school field.

It was reported that two other students - Abdullah Hazlan, 14, and Mohd Farhan Reza Badrol Hesam, 13, - sustained minor injuries.
