Senior Citizen Fined RM5,000 For Distributing Pirated Dvd

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 (Bernama) --A senior citizen was fined RM5,000, in default 12 months jail, by the AmpangMagistrate's Court here today for distributing or selling 3,154 pirated digital video discs (DVDs).

MagistrateHaslinda A.Raof meted out the fine on Lim Pong Tiew, 62, who pleaded guilty to the charge.

Lim was charged with screening, distributing or selling the DVDsof various titles and languages at his house inAmpang Jayahere at 5 pm last Oct 2.

The charge, under Section18(4)(a) of the Film Censorship Act 2002 and punishable under Section18(5) of the same law, provides a fine of up to RM30,000, or imprisonment for up to three years, or both, upon conviction.

In mitigation, Lim's lawyer,Kelvinder Singh Sidhu, said his client had no job and was supporting a wife and two children.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutorRaihanah Abdul Razak.
